Range of Services for Teaching Professionals

Open teaching consultations

Do you have questions regarding the design of your teaching event? Are you interested in new methodologies? Are you looking for suitable exam methods or assessment techniques? Would you like to discuss your teaching portfolio with an expert? The BZHL’s open teaching consultations can provide you with the space to discuss oyur individual concerns and queries regarding teaching at a higher academic institution. Consultations can be held online, by telephone or at the BZHL.

Please contact: Björn Kiehne

This range of services is free of charge for participants teaching at any of the 13 public universities and colleges in the Federal State of Berlin.

Teaching Innovation Project

We can help you develop and implement innovative teaching projects on site. The aim of the teaching innovation project is to transfer the skills acquired during the certificate programme to your teaching practice. Your project will demonstrate that you are able to plan and evaluate lectures, workshops, seminars etc. in a professional manner.

You will be advised and mentored by an expert in higher education teaching and a research assistant employed by the BZHL, who will help you with developing your idea, and be your point of contact during its implementation and for the final assessment.

Please contact: Björn Kiehne

To be mentored and receive guidance from the BZHL for a teaching project, potential participants must participate in a FOKUS event at the BZHL, or participate in a comparable course/ event provided by a partner university or institution of higher education. More information on the Berlin Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education.

As a professor you face numerous challenges and are expected to fulfil a range of – at times conflicting – roles, and to possess numerous skills, such as being able to teach a variety of different events, research and submit articles for publication, examine students, advise junior scientists, students and colleagues, as well as manage and lead projects.

Coaching gives you the opportunity to engage in and actively look at personal challenges in a safe environment and to develop new insights and behavioural patterns, in order to determine and set your own pace for your work. The one-to-one support afforded by coaching is ideal for deepening and developing your teaching practice, and of inestimable value for all teaching professionals.

Individual teaching observations

An external perspective can help you to recognise your ‘blind spots’ and identify new ways to improve your teaching practice.

What should the observer of your teaching event focus on? Would you like to know more about how to find a unifying theme that connects the sequence of your course, or are you more interested in which methods and media to use, or how to establish a rapport with your students? Or would you like to receive feedback on your body language, how you express yourself, and how you come across as a whole?

You can call us or arrange to come to the BZHL for a preliminary interview to discuss your concerns and requirements with the expert who will be observing your teaching event. You will subsequently discuss your experience with the expert and together consider whether a new approach is needed and what changes to make. This one-to-one format is suited for deepening and developing your teaching practice.

The BZHL clarifies the needs of the teaching staff. Teaching observations are either carried out by an employee of the BZHL, or the BZHL will propose an appropriate expert (and will also oversee the drafting of the agreement).
